Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a steep, tangled forest in Uganda’s south-west that holds close to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, split across several habituated family groups. Trekking to reach them is physically demanding, sometimes several hours through dense vegetation on uneven ground, but the hour spent with a gorilla family once found is what the whole park is built around.
Permits are limited and must be secured well in advance. Beyond gorilla trekking, the forest holds a rich array of birdlife and primates, and guided walks with local Batwa communities are offered at several of the park’s trailheads.
