The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a private reserve set between Tsavo West and Tsavo East, in rolling country beneath the hills that give it its name. Being private, it can offer game drives and guiding arrangements that the neighbouring national parks cannot.
Its lodges are built around floodlit waterholes, one of them raised on stilts so that elephants gather directly beneath the rooms after dark. It is a convenient and comfortable stop when travelling between the Tsavos or on to the coast, and the waterhole viewing alone tends to be the part guests remember.
