Mount Kenya

Best time: Jan-Feb, Jun-Oct Elephant, buffalo, colobus monkey, alpine flora

Africa's second highest mountain, ringed by forest and moorland on the equator.

Mount Kenya is the continent’s second highest peak and the country’s namesake, its glaciated summits sitting almost exactly on the equator. The lower slopes are wrapped in dense forest and bamboo that give way to giant lobelia and groundsel on the moorland above.

Trekking to Point Lenana, the third and walkable summit, takes three to five days and requires no technical climbing. For those not walking, the forest belt around the mountain holds elephant, buffalo and colobus monkey, and several lodges sit at its edge with the peak as a backdrop.
