A drier, wilder landscape north of the equator, cut through by the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Samburu National Reserve is known for the ‘Samburu Special Five’ – species rarely seen further south, including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and beisa oryx. It’s quieter than the Mara, with far fewer vehicles at every sighting, and the river draws elephant herds down to drink through the dry heat of the day.
