Nairobi National Park

Best time: Year-round Black rhino, lion, giraffe, over 400 bird species

The only national park within a capital city, with rhino and lion against a skyline backdrop.

Nairobi National Park is unique: a genuine wildlife area of open plains and river forest lying barely ten kilometres from the centre of the capital, with the city skyline visible behind the game. It is fenced on three sides but open to the south, allowing seasonal migration.

Despite its size it holds a dense black rhino population, lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe and over four hundred bird species. It works well at either end of a safari, particularly for guests with only a morning to spare before a flight. The David Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre are both close by.
