Zanzibar

Best time: Year-round, drier Jun-Oct Dolphins, coral reef, spice farms

The classic beach finish to a Tanzanian safari: white sand, warm water and the historic streets of Stone Town.

Zanzibar is the usual final stop after a northern Tanzania safari, reached by a short flight from Arusha or the Serengeti. Its beaches run along a coral coastline on the island’s north and east, with warm, calm water for much of the year.

Beyond the beach, Stone Town offers narrow winding streets, carved doorways and a genuine trading-port history, and the island’s spice farms can be visited on a half-day tour. It is a deliberately slow-paced few days, built to follow rather than compete with the safari that comes before it.
