12-Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Beach

You'll land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you for the one-hour transfer to Arusha, the traditional starting point for northern Tanzania safaris. The drive passes coffee plantations and small roadside markets as the road climbs toward the town at around 1,400 metres, with Mount Meru often visible above the haze.

The rest of the day is free at Arusha Planet Lodge to recover from the flight. Your guide will run through the days ahead over dinner, covering vehicle routines, park entry procedures and what to expect from the road conditions between parks. An early night is worth it, since the safari proper begins with a long drive the next morning.

After breakfast you'll drive around two and a half hours south to Tarangire National Park, known for its dense baobab trees and the seasonal concentrations of elephant along the Tarangire River. Once inside the park boundary, the afternoon is given over to a game drive through the riverine woodland and open grassland, where large elephant herds are a regular sight, alongside giraffe, impala and, with some luck, tree-climbing lions.

You'll check in to Tarangire Safari Lodge, set on a bluff overlooking the river valley, in time to watch the light change over the plains before dinner. The lodge's position makes it possible to spot elephant and buffalo moving along the riverbed from the terrace itself, without needing to be in the vehicle.

You'll leave Tarangire after breakfast for the roughly ninety-minute drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a narrow strip of park squeezed between the Rift Valley escarpment and the alkaline lake itself. The change in habitat is immediate, from Tarangire's dry bush to Manyara's groundwater forest, where blue monkeys and troops of baboon are common along the entry road.

The afternoon game drive works down toward the lake shore, where flamingos gather in the shallows in varying numbers depending on water levels, and hippo pods are usually visible from the viewpoints. You'll overnight at Lake Manyaras Secret, a short drive from the park gate, with the escarpment forming a backdrop to the evening.

This is a full transfer day, covering around four to five hours of driving with a stop at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance gate before descending into the Serengeti ecosystem. The route crosses the crater highlands, with views down into the Ngorongoro Crater itself from the rim road, before dropping onto the short grass plains that mark the start of the Serengeti.

Depending on the time of year and the migration's position, you may already see wildebeest and zebra herds spread across the plains as you approach Serengeti Serena. A short game drive is usually possible on arrival, before settling in to the lodge for the night with the plains stretching out below the rooms.

You'll spend the whole day inside the Serengeti, with morning and afternoon game drives covering different sections of the park depending on where wildlife concentrations are reported. The Serengeti's open plains give unusually long sightlines, and lion prides are often found resting under acacia shade or on rocky outcrops known as kopjes.

Your guide will use the morning cool for the more active hours, when predators are most likely to be moving, returning to the lodge for lunch before heading out again as the light softens in the late afternoon. Depending on the season, this can mean crossing paths with migrating wildebeest columns or, in quieter months, focusing on resident game around the central Seronera area.

After a final Serengeti breakfast, you'll drive back across the plains and up onto the crater highlands, arriving at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge on the forested rim by early to mid afternoon. The lodge sits at around 2,200 metres, considerably cooler than the plains below, and rooms look directly out over the crater basin.

The rest of the day is free to settle in and take in the view from the rim, with the crater floor visible far below through the afternoon cloud that often builds over the highlands. Your guide will confirm an early departure time for the crater descent the following morning, since the gate opens at first light and the best sightings tend to come before the day's heat builds.

You'll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at first light, dropping around 600 metres from the rim onto the floor of what is effectively a sealed ecosystem within the caldera walls. The crater holds a dense concentration of resident wildlife, including lion, elephant, buffalo and, on the open grassland near the soda lake, black rhino, one of the few reliable places in Tanzania to see them.

After a picnic breakfast inside the crater, you'll climb back up to the rim and drive to Arusha for a scheduled flight to Zanzibar. On arrival at Zanzibar's airport, a transfer takes you to Zuri Zanzibar on the northwest coast, where the pace changes entirely from the safari days behind you.

The first full day on the coast is left open, giving you time to adjust after the early starts of the safari itinerary. Zuri Zanzibar sits on a stretch of white sand beach with calm, shallow water typical of the island's northwest side, well suited to swimming at most tides.

You can spend the day around the pool and beach, arrange a massage, or simply read through the afternoon heat. Your guide or the lodge's activities desk can outline options for the coming days, from snorkelling trips to spice tours, so you can decide how much structure you want for the rest of the stay.

For those wanting to get into the water, a half-day boat trip can be arranged out to the reef systems off Zanzibar's coast, where snorkelling over coral gardens brings sightings of reef fish, and occasionally turtles in the clearer months. Boats typically depart mid-morning to work with the tides, returning by early afternoon.

Alternatively, the day can be kept entirely unstructured, with the beach at Zuri Zanzibar offering calm swimming conditions and loungers set under palm shade. Either way, the afternoon is generally quiet, leaving time to watch local dhows working the channel as the light lengthens toward evening.

A morning excursion to one of Zanzibar's spice farms is worth considering, giving a walking tour through plots growing cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and cardamom, with a guide explaining the island's history as a centre of the spice trade under Omani rule. Samples are usually offered along the way, and the tour typically finishes by early afternoon.

If you prefer to skip the excursion, the day remains free at Zuri Zanzibar, with the beach and pool available as on previous days. Some guests use this day for a trip into Stone Town instead, walking the narrow streets and markets before returning to the coast by evening.

Your final full day on the island is left unstructured, allowing you to settle into whatever routine has suited you best over the stay, whether that is early swims before the heat builds or a slower pace around the lodge grounds. Zuri Zanzibar's beachfront position makes it easy to fill the day with nothing more demanding than watching the tide move across the sand flats.

If you have not yet taken a sunset dhow cruise, this is a good evening for it, sailing out from the beach as the light turns over the water. Otherwise, a final dinner at the lodge closes out the trip before packing for the departure the next day.

Depending on your flight time, the morning can be spent on the beach for a last swim, or you may need to begin packing straight after breakfast. Your guide or the lodge will confirm the transfer time to Zanzibar's airport well in advance, allowing for the short drive from the northwest coast.
