6-Day Great Migration Safari with Zanzibar

Your guide collects you in Arusha for the drive south to Tarangire National Park, around two and a half hours on a tarmac road that gives way to red dirt as you near the park gate. Tarangire's landscape is dominated by ancient baobabs and the Tarangire River, which draws huge concentrations of elephant even in the dry months, along with lion, giraffe and dense herds of buffalo.

You'll settle into Tarangire Safari Lodge, perched on a bluff overlooking the river valley, in time for lunch. The afternoon brings your first game drive, tracking elephant families along the riverbanks as the heat softens toward evening. Dinner is served at the lodge, with the valley falling into darkness below the terrace.

This is a long transfer day, roughly six to seven hours on the road as you leave Tarangire and cross toward the Serengeti's remote northern reaches, near the Mara River. Your guide breaks the journey with stops through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area's open grassland, where Maasai livestock and wildlife still share the same pasture, and again as you drop into the Serengeti's endless plains.

You'll game drive as you go, watching for topi, hartebeest and the first big herds of wildebeest if the migration is in the area. By late afternoon you arrive at Serengeti Serena's northern camp, set among rocky kopjes above the Mara River corridor, timed for a sundowner before dinner.

You'll spend the full day in vehicle range of the Mara River, where between July and October the wildebeest and zebra herds mass on the banks before attempting crossings against strong current and waiting crocodiles. Your guide reads the herds' behaviour, positioning at known crossing points and being ready to wait, since timing is never fixed and can mean hours of patience for a single dash across.

Between crossings you'll cover the surrounding plains, where lion prides often follow the herds closely and hyena clans patrol the fringes. A picnic lunch is taken in the field so you can stay out through the middle of the day. You return to Serengeti Serena for dinner as the light fades over the river.

You'll drive south this morning into the Seronera area, the Serengeti's central region and its most reliable game-viewing ground outside migration season, roughly three hours from the northern camp. The Seronera River valley holds resident lion prides year-round, along with leopard in the riverine fig trees and healthy numbers of cheetah working the open grass.

An afternoon game drive covers the kopjes and river drainages where predators rest through the heat of the day, with your guide watching for fresh tracks and circling vultures that often signal a kill nearby. You'll return to Serengeti Serena for a second night, the lodge built into the granite outcrops with views across the surrounding plains at sunset.

The drive out of the Serengeti climbs steadily onto the Ngorongoro highlands, roughly four hours including stops, with the plains giving way to montane forest as you gain altitude past 2,200 metres. Your guide pauses at Naabi Hill and again at the crater's descent road for a first view down into the caldera, its floor still some 600 metres below the rim.

You'll reach Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, built directly on the crater rim, in time for a late lunch, with the afternoon free to enjoy the forest around the lodge grounds and the cool highland air, a marked change from the Serengeti heat. Dinner is served with the crater visible below, mist often settling into it as evening comes on.

An early start takes you down the crater access road for a morning game drive on the floor, where the enclosed grassland and Lake Magadi's soda flats hold dense wildlife including the crater's black rhino, along with lion, hyena and large buffalo herds that rarely leave this bowl. Your guide works the floor through mid-morning before the climb back out to the rim.

From there you'll drive to Arusha for a scheduled flight to Zanzibar, arriving on the island by late afternoon. A transfer brings you to Zuri Zanzibar on the northwest coast, where the Indian Ocean and white sand replace the highland cold, closing the safari with one night by the water before onward travel.
