The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, its floor lying some six hundred metres below a rim that you descend by a single steep road. Within its walls, around twenty-five thousand large animals live in a space of roughly two hundred and sixty square kilometres.
That density is what makes it extraordinary: black rhino, large lion prides, elephant bulls carrying exceptional tusks, buffalo, hippo and flamingo on the soda lake, all within a morning’s drive. The crater is busy, and that is the honest trade-off, but there is nowhere else where so much is concentrated in so small an area. Most itineraries pair it with the Serengeti.
