A southern Kenya circuit built around two contrasting parks: Amboseli, with its large elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro, and Tsavo West, a wilder volcanic landscape of lava flows, springs and open bush. The route runs conveniently between Nairobi and the coast.
The Route
Amboseli
Depart Nairobi in the morning and travel south towards the Tanzanian border, arriving at Amboseli in time for lunch. The afternoon game drive seeks out the park's elephant herds, which gather around the spring-fed swamps at the centre of the park.
Amboseli
An early start, when Kilimanjaro is most often clear of cloud and at its most photogenic. The day is spent exploring the swamps, the open pans and Observation Hill, with its long view across the park. Amboseli's elephants are among the most studied in Africa and are frequently seen at very close range.
Tsavo West
Travel east into Tsavo West, a park of lava flows, volcanic hills and dense bush that feels markedly wilder than Amboseli. Visit Mzima Springs, where hippo and crocodile can be watched from an underwater viewing chamber, before an afternoon game drive.
Tsavo West
A final morning game drive through the park before breakfast and the return journey to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon. The route can alternatively continue to Mombasa or Diani for those extending to the coast.
