Bigodi Wetland

Best time: Jun-Sep, Dec-Feb Eight primate species, over 200 bird species

A community-run swamp sanctuary beside Kibale, exceptional for primates and birds on foot.

The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary sits on the edge of Kibale National Park and is run entirely by the local community, with revenue supporting village schools and clinics. A raised boardwalk and forest trails let you explore the papyrus swamp on foot with a local guide.

Eight primate species are found here, including red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey and l’Hoest’s monkey, and the birding is exceptional with over two hundred species recorded, the great blue turaco among the most sought after. It pairs naturally with a morning of chimpanzee tracking in Kibale.
