Day 01 of 03

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Entebbe to Bwindi

You'll set off early from Entebbe for the drive to Bwindi, a journey of around eight to nine hours that crosses the equator and climbs steadily through Uganda's western highlands. Your guide will point out the terraced tea and banana plantations around Mbarara and Kabale before the road narrows into the switchbacks that lead down into the Kigezi highlands, known locally as the Switzerland of Africa for their folded green hills. A stop at the equator line and a lunch break en route break up the drive.

By late afternoon you'll reach Rushaga, on the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and check into Rushaga Gorilla Lodge. The forest here sits above 2,000 metres, and evenings are cool, with mist often settling over the canopy. There is time to rest before an early start the next morning, and your guide will run through the trekking briefing for the following day.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Trail

After an early breakfast you'll head to Rushaga park headquarters for the trekking briefing, where rangers assign trekking groups to the habituated gorilla families in the sector. The walk into the forest can take anywhere from one to several hours, following steep, often muddy trails through dense understorey and bamboo stands as altitude and terrain shift underfoot. Reaching a gorilla family, you'll spend an hour observing them at close range, watching interactions between silverbacks, mothers and juveniles in their natural forest setting.

In the afternoon, once you're back at the lodge and have had lunch, you'll join a Batwa cultural walk on the forest fringe. Former forest-dwellers displaced when Bwindi became a protected park, the Batwa lead you through demonstrations of traditional hunting techniques, fire-making, medicinal plant use and song, giving context to a way of life tied directly to this forest before it became a national park.

Kampala

Bwindi to Kampala or Entebbe

You'll leave Rushaga after breakfast for the return drive to Kampala or Entebbe, retracing the route back through Kabale and Mbarara. The road drops out of the misty Kigezi highlands into flatter savanna country, and your guide can arrange a stop at the equator crossing for photographs, along with a lunch break at one of the roadside stops en route.

Depending on your onward flight time, you'll be dropped either at Entebbe International Airport or at your Kampala hotel by early evening. This final day is largely a transfer, giving you a last look at rural Ugandan life along the highway, from roadside markets to matatu stops, before your gorilla trekking trip comes to a close.
