Tsavo East
Day 01 of 06

Tsavo East

Nairobi to Tsavo East

Your safari begins with the road out of the city, farmland giving way to open country. You will reach Tsavo East with the afternoon still ahead of you, and be out on a first drive while the light is long.

Tsavo East trades constant sightings for space and quiet. The plains run red and the elephants are red with them, dusted from bathing in the soil. Along the Galana River there is game most of the year, and the Yatta Plateau runs the length of the western edge.

Tsavo East

A Full Day in Tsavo East

A full day here, and no reason to hurry it. You will be out before sunrise while the air is still cold, back through the worst of the heat, and out again as the light softens.

You may not pass another vehicle all afternoon here, which is the point. The park is enormous, and it rewards patience rather than delivering on demand.

Tsavo West
Day 03 of 06

Tsavo West

Tsavo East to Tsavo West

You will move on to Tsavo West, the landscape shifting as you go. Game viewing carries on through the transfer, and there will be an afternoon drive once you have settled in.

Tsavo West is greener and stranger than its neighbour, built on old lava with volcanic hills behind. At Mzima Springs fifty million gallons surface daily through porous rock, and an underwater chamber lets you watch hippo from below the waterline, which is as odd and good as it sounds.

Tsavo West
Day 04 of 06

Tsavo West

A Full Day in Tsavo West

Today belongs to this place. Your guide will shape it around what is actually happening on the ground, which is usually how the best sightings find you.

The Shetani flow and the Chyulu Hills give this side real drama. Waterholes fill through the afternoon with elephant and buffalo, and there is a rhino sanctuary at Ngulia for those who ask.

Taita Hills
Day 05 of 06

Taita Hills

Tsavo West to the Taita Hills

The road today leads to the Taita Hills. The drive is part of it rather than an interruption, and your guide will stop wherever stopping is worth it.

The sanctuary is private, which buys you flexibility the national parks cannot offer. The lodges sit above floodlit waterholes, one of them raised on stilts so elephants gather directly beneath the rooms after dark. Most guests remember the evening watch more than the drives.

Nairobi
Day 06 of 06

Nairobi

Taita Hills to Nairobi

Today is mostly a transfer, and a chance to draw breath: repack, sleep properly, and be ready for what comes next.
